Most human resource managers are not surprised to learn that only one in five absent workers is actually ill. The survey found that while illness (32 percent) is still the leading cause of absence from work, family issues, stress and recreation (40 percent) are key factors as well. Overall, employees with full time status used an average of 6.8 sick days in the year 2001, and 44 percent used two days or fewer. Absences are costly to any organization regardless of the size.
