At GlobalLogic, impact isn’t limited just to code, it extends to the communities we host. Sometimes, the biggest change starts with the smallest idea. The story you are about to read is a powerful reminder of how much can be achieved through collective generosity. Our colleague, Daniel Mocan, Web Competency Lead, turned a simple morning thought into the Donations Community, which has since raised over €110,000. This initiative proves that collective goodwill, built on simple gestures, can create profound social change.

The Origin Story: What motivated you and your colleagues to create the Donations Community?

It all started one morning while I was waiting for my coffee. That cup cost about 10 lei (around €2), and a thought hit me: “What if, once a month, I skipped that coffee and donated the money instead? And what if I could get a few colleagues to join me? Together, we could make a difference.”

I’ve always believed that people are good, they just need the opportunity to show it. Many feel their individual impact is too small, but when you bring friends and colleagues together, those small gestures multiply into something powerful. We started with my first donation of just €4 . Now, we regularly raise between €600 and €1,500 monthly, with our record month exceeding €9,000.

In our very first month, March 2019, we raised around €100. Since then, we’ve collected more than €110,000, helping a few thousand people and some furry friends along the way. Over 400 unique colleagues have donated, and this was all done locally in Romania.

Community & Role Synergy: How do you balance your day-to-day role with your involvement in the Donations Community?

My career at GlobalLogic began through an internship and evolved into my current role as a Web Competency Lead. I see myself as an engineering manager who loves the technical side but also dives deep into the product from a business perspective.

A little over a year ago, I experienced a full-circle moment: I joined a client whose mission is to help companies do good in the world through donations and social impact programs. After being part of the Donations Community for five years, I suddenly found myself working on a product that scales that exact mission globally. We’re a close-knit team of seven, building a platform that helps organizations strengthen their corporate social responsibility efforts and actively engage employees in meaningful causes. From a technical standpoint, it’s a dream project built with TypeScript, React, Node.js, and MongoDB. It also encourages the use of modern AI tools like Cursor to streamline development and spark creativity. For me, it’s the ideal blend of technology and purpose building something good, with good tech, for a good cause.

What was your most emotional moment within the community?

It’s hard to choose just one emotional moment because there have been so many. From colleagues who donated personal items for our charity auctions to those who personally delivered goods to the Romania–Ukraine border just days after the war began, every act of kindness has left a mark. Each of these moments reminds me that we’re surrounded by extraordinary people who genuinely care about helping others.

It’s been amazing to see my colleagues’ involvement month after month. None of the impact we’ve had would have been possible without their generosity and big hearts.

Team Culture vs. Community Spirit: What keeps the Donations Community motivated and inspired?

The community’s spirit truly shines when our own colleagues have needed help. The involvement and support during those moments were incredible.

It’s comforting to know that if something ever went wrong for me or my family, there’s this network of amazing colleagues ready to lend a hand. That sense of belonging, of knowing you’re not alone, is what defines the Donations Community. It’s more than teamwork, it’s solidarity in its purest form.

We ensure transparency is key. Every month, colleagues can propose causes, and we vote publicly. That openness builds trust and keeps the spirit of giving alive.

Here’s what other members say about the community spirit:

Aura: “It’s truly important that donations genuinely reach the people who need them most. What makes it even more meaningful is that, beyond just contributing financially, colleagues have the opportunity to propose and vote on causes, this involvement makes this community even stronger.”

Dorin: “This community represents a window for me to give back to the world. It’s an easy way each month to help others.”

Razvan: “For me, this community is a way for us as a team to support the causes that require help. I appreciate and am grateful to everyone here, and especially to Daniel Mocan.”

Anonim: “The Donation Community is an opportunity to be kind. Don’t miss it! I like the governance of this community, you can trust that your contribution is well used. Thank you everybody for making monthly initiatives possible!”

Future and Legacy: How do you see the future of the Donations Community within GlobalLogic?

I hope that one day we’ll inspire the creation of other Donation Communities across GlobalLogic, maybe starting with our European offices. It would be wonderful to see local initiatives grow, connected by shared goals and the same spirit of generosity.

Following the example of projects like the Moving Challenge, our internal wellbeing program, initiated in Romania and adopted by 7 countries this year, I’d love for us to occasionally set common goals across countries. That would give us the chance not only to collaborate but also to meet and celebrate the amazing colleagues who share this mission of doing good.

Advice for a Future Colleague: Why should a future colleague join GlobalLogic and get involved in internal communities?

No workplace is perfect. What really matters is the people, and here, they’re genuinely kind and diverse. You’ll find all types of personalities, which means there is a big chance you will find someone with similar interests and find your place in the company.

Beyond work, there are plenty of opportunities to connect through different communities, from technical groups to others like the Donations Community or Smart Financials. At GlobalLogic, you don’t just join a company, you join a network of people who care about learning, growing, and doing good together.

Pass the ball. Since you already mentioned the Smart Financials Community, what stories or insights do you think we should look into with them?

I really admire the Smart Financial Community. I’ve learned so many valuable things from them. If I could ask them one question, it would be: “What has been the real impact of your community on its members?
