Role Summary
We are looking for a Design System Owner who will independently own, maintain, and evolve our design system within a live product environment. This role requires strong product understanding, proactive system governance, clear documentation, and close collaboration with engineering – not just component creation.
The Design System Owner will be embedded with product design and engineering teams and is responsible for ensuring consistency, usability, and scalability across our products while reducing complexity and unnecessary variation.
We operate a single design system that is shared across multiple products. While there are currently implementation differences due to legacy front-end frameworks, our goal is convergence on a common React Aria–based framework (Beacon-UI). This role is responsible for maintaining a unified system, managing temporary variations thoughtfully, and guiding the transition toward full alignment over time.

Key Responsibilities
Design System Ownership & Governance
• Own the design system end-to-end: components, patterns, templates, and usage rules.
• Actively limit and consolidate component variants.
• Maintain a clear record of existing components and their intended use cases.
• Prevent duplicate or unnecessary components from being created.

Documentation & Enablement
• Create clear, lightweight documentation explaining when and how to use components.
• Provide real product examples and decision guidance.
• Create page templates and design patterns that designers can reuse confidently.

Product & Engineering Alignment
• Maintain alignment between the Design System and the implemented product UI.
• Work directly with developers to correct inconsistencies.
• Drive issues to resolution — not just audits or recommendations.
• Ensure components shown in design reviews match engineering reality.

Proactive Maintenance
• Independently audit design files and the product for inconsistencies.
• Fix issues without waiting for direction.
• Identify opportunities to improve scalability and efficiency.
• Stay current with evolving UI patterns (including AI-related interfaces).

Communication & Collaboration
• Communicate clearly and adapt explanations based on feedback.
• Work effectively with global teams.
• Proactively share updates, changes, and decisions w/ design and engineering.

Required Experience
• 5+ years in product design with hands-on design system ownership.
• Experience maintaining a design system inside a real, shipped product.
• Strong Figma expertise (components, libraries, variants).
• Experience collaborating closely with engineering teams.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal oversight.

Success Looks Like
• Fewer component variants over time.
• Designers understand which components to use and why.
• Design files match the product UI and vice versa.
• Reduced confusion and rework in design reviews.
• Minimal management overhead required.

We are not looking for someone who only builds components or performs audits.
We need someone who:
• Takes ownership without waiting for direction
• Documents usage and creates templates
• Works directly with developers to resolve issues
• Understands and actively learns the product
• Reduces complexity instead of adding variants
• Has owned a design system and worked with engineering to implement it, not just contributed to one
