Description

About the Client
Our client is a global leader in eye care, dedicated to improving lives by enhancing sight. With a strong portfolio of innovative products—including contact lenses, eye care solutions, and surgical instruments for cataract and retina procedures—they serve customers in over 140 countries. By advancing cutting-edge technologies and solutions, they continue to shape the future of eye health worldwide.

About the Project
As part of their ongoing innovation, our client is enhancing their medical devices with advanced connectivity features and cloud-based services. Since adoption of next-generation solutions is gradual, the project must ensure smooth integration between legacy and modern systems in real-world environments.

The mission is to design and deliver a comprehensive set of tools, services, and libraries that enable seamless interoperability of existing devices with both cloud and on-premises infrastructures. The focus is on ensuring data integrity, security, and interoperability across all systems.

Project Status
The project has successfully completed its high-level requirements definition and initial technical planning. The next stage involves detailed design, implementation, and verification & validation activities. To achieve this, our client is now scaling up the software engineering team and seeking skilled professionals to join this critical phase of development.

Requirements

The Scrum Master & Exploratory Test Engineer combines two complementary responsibilities in a split role (Scrum Master 20‑40%, Exploratory Device Testing 60‑80%). As Scrum Master, the role serves primarily the RTD FrontEnd development team and may expand to cover the VideoUnit team (approx. 20% SM capacity per team). As Exploratory Test Engineer, the role performs hands-on testing directly on the NextGenRS Refractive Treatment Device hardware in a regulated medical device environment.

The RTD FrontEnd is a Windows x86-64 embedded system hosting multiple applications (FESupervisorApp, FEUserApp, FELogTransport, FemtoScan Service) that drive the full clinical workflow from patient selection through treatment execution. The VideoUnit is a Xilinx Zynq Ultrascale Linux system responsible for real-time image processing, eye tracking (SmartCam interface), and the Ophthalmic Digital Microscope. Both systems are safety-classified software under IEC 62304 and require rigorous test coverage. The Scrum Master is a key role responsible for enabling team effectiveness and high-quality delivery in a safety-critical, highly regulated environment.

Core Qualifications Include:

  • 3+ years of hands-on experience as a Scrum Master or Agile Coach for software development teams.
  • Active Scrum Master certification (CSM, PSM I) preferred; PSM II or equivalent strongly preferred.
  • Proven experience facilitating Scrum for embedded, firmware, or medical device software teams.
  • 3+ years of experience in exploratory or hands-on functional software testing, ideally on real embedded hardware or medical devices.
  • Familiarity with Session-Based Test Management (SBTM) or comparable structured exploratory testing approaches.
  • Practical experience with Azure DevOps (backlog management, sprint boards, defect tracking, build/release pipelines).
  • Solid understanding of Windows desktop application testing (UI workflows, configuration, error handling).
  • Ability to read and interpret C++ application architecture and system integration diagrams for test planning purposes.
  • Experience working in Agile teams using feature-driven development, time-boxing, and artifact management.
  • Interpersonal skills with a proven ability to achieve constructive solutions in cross-departmental topics, as well as in organizing and motivating team members.
  • Fluent English; intermediate-level German. Onsite, Erlangen, no home office

Job responsibilities

  • Facilitate all Scrum ceremonies for the FrontEnd team (sprint planning, daily stand-up, sprint review, retrospective) and optionally a second team (VideoUnit).
  • Coach team members on Agile/Scrum principles, continuous improvement, and self-organization; act as a servant leader and team advocate.
  • Identify and actively remove impediments; manage cross-team dependencies and escalate blockers to management as needed.
  • Maintain team health metrics (velocity, sprint burndown, defect aging) and communicate progress transparently to stakeholders.
  • Collaborate closely with the Product Owner on backlog refinement, sprint goal clarity, and Definition of Done alignment.
  • Support adoption of AI-assisted development workflows, CI/CD pipelines, and Azure DevOps tooling within the team.
  • Facilitate continuous process improvement using retrospective data; drive Agile maturity across one or two Scrum teams.
  • Plan, design, and execute exploratory test sessions on the NextGenRS Refractive Treatment Device (hardware-in-the-loop), focusing on clinical user workflows of the FrontEnd application.
  • Apply Session-Based Test Management (SBTM) and exploratory test charters; document findings with clear reproducibility steps and severity classification.
  • Collaborate with software engineers and verification engineers to triage defects; create and track issues in Azure DevOps.
  • Contribute to test strategy and risk-based coverage decisions alongside the Quality and Architecture team.
  • Produce lightweight test artifacts required under IEC 62304 (test session reports, defect records, anomaly reports) in coordination with the Quality team.
  • Validate integration of FrontEnd with BackEnd, VideoUnit, and Refractive Server Device (RSD) at the system level during sprint deliveries.
