The project centers on the development of a next-generation device platform built around a modern, high-performance microcontroller architecture. Key initiatives include upgrading the underlying operating system, modernizing the platform’s internal communication from a legacy bus to a higher-bandwidth Ethernet-based transport for demanding data and imaging needs, and strengthening the hardware abstraction layer to improve portability and maintainability.
Requirements
We are seeking an Embedded Engineer to join the development of next-generation medical device platforms. The role focuses on real-time, safety-aware firmware for systems combining precision motor control, high-bandwidth data transfer, and modern microcontroller architectures.
The client developed a custom Android-based tablet solution that serves as the user interface for display systems integrated within medical platform. The tablet platform is built on the Compulab UCM-iMX8M-Plus System-on-Module (SOM). The current platform is migrating to a new NXP i.MX-class microcontroller and transitioning its internal communication from CAN to Ethernet to support higher-bandwidth needs such as image data transfer.
The objective of this project is to:
- Upgrade the existing platform from Android OS 14 to Android OS 16
- Follow a phased approach, with User-Debug build delivered on priority
- Deliver a secure, production-ready OS build with full hardware interface support
Job responsibilities
• Lead and execute operating system upgrade and platform integration initiatives, ensuringseamless adoption across the embedded environment.
• Diagnose and resolve complex build, integration, and interface challenges to maintain a stable and continuously deliverable codebase.
• Architect, implement, and validate Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL) interfaces that enable robust, portable interaction between software and hardware.
• Leverage established test tooling and automation scripts to perform thorough verification and safeguard platform reliability.
• Advise stakeholders with well-reasoned recommendations on system architecture, risk mitigation, and performance optimization.
