Technician

Summary

The Technician is a passionate and highly skilled OSM expert who is responsible for editing, analyzing, and maintaining large sets of OSM data. They have a deep knowledge of all map elements, including roads, water, AOIs, and buildings. The role requires critical thinking and includes opportunities to provide insight into improving workflows, tools, and policies. Technicians work alongside OSM community members to edit and maintain data in numerous countries around the world.

Key responsibilities

  • Create, edit, and maintain OSM data sets to support high quality routing, search, and display use cases
  • Deep understanding of all OSM data feature types and the OSM data model
  • Utilization of aerial and street level imagery and other resources to perform job responsibilities
  • Research open resources that solve editing tasks and help create new workflows
  • Identify patterns and anomalies in map data and identify corrective actions
  • Report and communicate data issues with peers and team leads
  • Communicate with the external OSM community about data issues in their areas

Qualifications

  • Relevant experience in OSM or map production or BA/BS in a related field
  • Hands-on experience with OSM editing tools like ID and JOSM. QGIS and ArcGIS experience will be a plus
  • Ability to accurately interpret map data and use resources/tools provided for editing maps with high quality
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and complete projects efficiently
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Multilingual reading and writing skills are preferred but not required
  • Demonstrated effective analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
  • Appreciation of open data environment and willingness to work alongside OSM community editors

Quality Control Technician

Summary

The QC Technician is a highly skilled OSM quality expert with deep knowledge of OSM quality checks, workflows, and policies, and a passion for providing feedback to others to build individual and team competencies.. This job requires the ability to learn quickly and manage overlapping tasks with a high degree of attention to detail to ensure high-quality standards are maintained. The QC Technician reviews map technicians’ work and provides feedback according to OSM and client map guidelines. The QCer has a critical role as a coach and trainer, who continuously improves technician quality and thus ensures OSM data quality. This is a key role that defines the success of the project.

Key responsibilities

  • Review data sets mapped by technicians to ensure quality standards are being met
  • Identify error trends and conduct workshops to improve technician and overall project quality
  • Perform root cause analysis (RCA) on errors and identify policy and workflow gaps
  • Conduct data audits on internal data and external community edits
  • Edit data as necessary
  • Utilize critical thinking to creatively solve problems
  • Report and communicate data issues with peers and team leads
  • Communicate with the external OSM community about edits in their areas

Qualifications

  • Relevant experience in OSM or map production or BA/BS in a related field
  • Previous experience performing quality checks and audits
  • Hands-on experience using OSM editing & quality tools. Experience using QGIS, ArcGIS and PostgreSQL will be a plus
  • Ability to accurately interpret map data and use resources/tools to identify data anomalies and map errors
  • Ability to coach technicians, document, and conduct workshops
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and complete projects, and adjust to changing priorities
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Multilingual reading and writing skills are preferred but not required
  • Appreciation of open data environment and willingness to work alongside OSM community editors

Team Lead

Summary

 The Team Lead is responsible for managing technicians and quality control technicians. The Lead manages multiple projects simultaneously and is responsible for achieving project goals. The Lead works with a team and independently at a fast pace with a high level of flexibility in managing changing priorities. Leads collaborate on ideas for improving the project and conducting pilots for workflows and tools. The Lead works closely with clients on a daily basis, providing regular status updates and reports of issues and opportunities. They Inspire, motivate, coach, and guide their teams. This role requires a passion for managing maps teams.

Key responsibilities

  • Deep understanding of OSM data, data model, workflow, and policies to guide team members in problem-solving and decision-making.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously and prioritize team’s workload
  • Allocate work to the team and manage performance (production and quality) to meet expected standards
  • Effectively communicate and document changes in policies to ensure delivery quality
  • Work closely with the client leadership team to provide regular status updates on tasks assigned along with publishing reports as necessary
  • Collaborate with other leads and teams working towards common goals
  • Initiate pilot projects and oversee from start to finish, including documenting observations and making recommendations
  • Oversee communications with external OSM community editors to ensure positive relationships
  • Propose new ideas for improving processes, tools, and policies

Qualifications

  • Relevant experience in OSM or map production or BA/BS in a related field
  • Experience leading others and projects. Team leadership experience desired.
  • Hands-on experience with OSM editing tools like JOSM and ID is required. QGIS, ArcGIS and PostgreSQL experience will be a plus
  • Demonstrated effective analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and complete multiple projects simultaneously with frequently changing priorities.
  • Strong data analysis, reporting, documentation, and communication skills
  • Appreciation of open data environment and willingness to work alongside OSM community editors

Trainer

Summary

The Trainer is a key role, responsible for all training needs across the team. The Trainer develops training programs aimed at improving the overall training experience and team knowledge. They create, organize, and maintain training schedules and materials, and build new trainings as needed for new workflows, policies, tools, and knowledge gaps. They manage training logistics, such as scheduling, account access, and training databases. The Trainer works closely with editing and QC teams to understand training needs and conduct workshops when necessary. They present trainings to groups and individuals, coach editors on new concepts, deliver training exercises, and provide feedback that ensures understanding.

Key responsibilities

  • Manage onboarding and training of new hires and ensure trainees perform at a high quality
  • Create and maintain training plans, schedules, and logistics.
  • Create, modify, and maintain training materials with new policies, workflows, and tools
  • Conduct classroom trainings, assessments, and on-the-spot refreshers
  • Collaborate with clients and leads to understand training needs, equipment, and infrastructure
  • Incorporate creative ideas which make training interactive and fun
  • Mentor trainees who are working on exercises and monitor them until they are competent to work independently

Qualifications

  • Relevant experience in OSM or map production or BA/BS in a related field
  • Experience training or mentoring others
  • Hands-on experience with OSM editing tools like JOSM and ID is required. QGIS and ArcGIS experience will be a plus
  • Ability to accurately interpret map data and use resources/tools provided for editing maps with high quality
  • Experience using various teaching techniques, like explaining rationale and explaining the impact through live editing or case studies
  • Ability to create and maintain presentation materials
  • Ability to explain complicated concepts and ensure all participants understand, regardless of their learning styles
  • Appreciation of open data environment and willingness to work alongside OSM community editors
