What is Edge Computing?

Edge Computing is where devices, applications, or computing processes interact near its source or the Internet at the edge of a network, rather than with a data center. Such devices can include scanners, appliances, smartwatches, autonomous robots, and self-driving cars.

How does Edge Computing work?

By positioning computing resources closer to where data is created, devices and computing processes are less dependent on the cloud or centralized data centers, making processing in real time and storage more reliable and cost efficient. Edge computing improves response times, while saving bandwidth and avoiding costly bottlenecks. Gartner now predicts that 75 percent of enterprise-generated data will be processed outside traditional data centers or cloud environments at the edge.

What are the business benefits of Edge Computing?

  • Improves reliability and operational continuity since devices and applications run independently of central data systems
  • Enhances compliance, regulatory, and security measures because of the reduction of exposure to data breaches
  • Reduces the need for greater bandwidth requirements because edge networks can be a bridge from local data to avoid excessive cloud traffic, like a GPS device using traffic signals and other vehicles and landmarks to run
  • Provides real-time information and analytics, which allows organizations to understand and react to data quickly, facilitating critical decision-making
  • Boosts employee productivity by reducing interruptions and preventable mistakes due to automation and predictive maintenance
