What is Data Migration?
Data Migration is the process of transferring data from one storage system or computer environment to another. This commonly occurs when a company needs to modernize an outdated system, or move data to a new server, new data center or to the cloud, or while integrating data from an acquisition or merger. Because of its complexity, a data migration needs to ensure that the quality, integrity, and security of the data is maintained during migration. There are several types of migrations, including database migration, cloud migration, data center migration, business process migration, application migration, and storage migration.

When performing a data migration, the first step is to analyze and access the data. Then a determination needs to be made on the best way to execute the transfer of the data between systems. Finally, the data needs careful analysis and validation that it is accurate and the transfer complete.
